SARAS proposes an innovative technological system:
1. Two assistive robotic arms designed to implement the tasks done by the assistant surgeon in R-MIS (Robotic Minimally Invasive Surgery).
2. A cooperative and cognitive supervisor system able to infer the actual state of the surgical procedure from the sensing system and to act accordingly with the surgeon’s needs.
1. MULTIROBOTS-SURGERY: the main surgeon uses a robotic system, the assistant surgeon tele-operates the SARAS assistive robotic arms.
2. SOLO-SURGERY: the system is autonomous and plays the role of the assistant in the R-MIS
3. LAPARO2.0-SURGERY: SARAS system plays the role of the assistant and the main surgeon uses standard laparoscopic tools.
SARAS will lead to a new generation of autonomous surgical robots.
SARAS will go beyond any existing system for R-MIS, leveraging on a ground-breaking artificial intelligence module.
The aim is to develop a cognitive robotic system capable of autonomously understanding the present and future surgical situation, and performing actions at the right place and time.
SARAS platform is designed to both complement any existing and future surgical robotic system and to be used alone for traditional laparoscopic operations performed in solo surgery mode.
The aims are to decrease the cost per surgical operation, increase the number of interventions, reduce waiting lists and boost efficiency of Healthcare system across Europe.

One fundamental requirement for autonomy is advanced perception capability through vision sensors.
In this article, we propose a novel calibration technique for a surgical scenario with a da Vinci® Research Kit (dVRK) robot. Camera and robotic arms calibration are necessary to precise position and emulate expert surgeons. The novel calibration technique is tailored for RGB-D cameras.

Paul Morand was used to say that lost time is earned. It means that the time we are all investing in this research project will be the time gained during the R-MIS interventions equipped with the SARAS arms. What we will all gain will not only be the time but also the precision and the surgical efficiency in conjunction with patient safety.
The SARAS project aims to solve the problems of robotic surgery reducing imprecision and helping the assistant surgeon to speed up and eliminate errors. At the moment, the first surgeon drives a racing car (the daVinci robot) and the second surgeon rides a bicycle (the laparascopic instruments, which are much more difficult to be used relative to the robot). Thanks to SARAS this gap will be closed!

He worked as a Research Associate in Vellore Institute of Technology University, India. His current research includes action recognition and anomaly detection in surgical robots.
PhD in Mechanical Engineering from TU Vienna, active in translational R&D since about 20 years - mostly in the areas of service robotics, medical robotics and instruments, and surgical training systems.
She won a scholarships at the Politecnico di Milano, she worked as a research fellow at the Grigioni’s Foundation (Milan) and at the University Hospital of Wuerzburg (Germany). Her research interests include kinematic, dynamic and muscular activity data acquisition and elaboration with infrared-based optoelectronic and electromyography systems.
A PhD (2018) and MSc (2013) in Biomedical Engineering and BSc (2012) in Biotechnology. She is currently working as a postdoctoral researcher at an interdisciplinary Institute for Medical Science and Technology (IMSaT), University of Dundee. Her research interests include preclinical validation of novel imaging modalities, image guided therapies and robotic surgeries.

His PhD is in Computer Vision and Deep Learning for facial expression analysis. His current research focuses on semantic segmentation and activity analysis for the surgical robotic assistant.
